What’s in Photographing Flowers

Kim Cuc Tran, Yaquina Art Association Photographers

Kim will present the process of creating her flower images — from composing to post processing. She will discuss composition, lighting, background, equipment, and post-processing.

Kim was born and raised in Vietnam, escaping the communists by boat to Malaysia in 1980, then immigrated to the US in 1981. She graduated from Cal State University of Long Beach with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1986. Her engineering career led her to Oregon in 2001. She and her husband retired and moved to Newport, Oregon in 2009.

Photography has been a hobby and interest in her life. Her photography skill flourished as she started taking photography classes with the Vietnamese Artistic Photographic Association in 1993. Kim advanced further as she studied for 5 years at Tri-Community Photography School in Covina, California.

The process of capturing an image is fulfilling and enjoyable to her. She and her husband both enjoy going out looking for inspiring shots. They have been traveling for photography to many locations in the US and to many other countries.

Kim enjoys shooting abstracts, close-ups, birds and flowers; and then creates artistic photos to share with the viewers. Her mantra for photography is “Simplify, simplify, simplify”. This mantra has served her well in the process of capturing and creating inspiring images.

Kim has received numerous awards in photography competitions.

Shaping Light

John Ritchie, Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild

Creating and controlling light gives the photographer the ability to create, sculpt and manipulate shapes, bringing out desired qualities and emphasizing whatever aspects of an image they wish. I will show and discuss techniques to imagine and create photographic art by shaping light.

John Ritchie has been studying photography for about 15 years. His two primary interests have been night and people photography but he has always enjoyed manipulating light to reveal shapes he sees around him. He has exhibited his work nationwide. His work can be seen at https://johnritchieimages.com/
