They say you can learn from observing the work of others. But how do you critically evaluate a photo to go from “wow, I really like that” to being able to appreciate the photographer’s decisions and the techniques that went into creating the image? What are the criteria that you can use to better qualify what it is that you like about an image so that you can apply similar criteria when you are behind the camera?
For our February 6 program, we have the unique opportunity to put ourselves in the judge’s chair. Three of our trained judges have each selected several images from a recent MEID Traditional image judging session for presentation during this program. We will begin by showing each image without commentary, so participants can make notes about their observations and/or give each image a numerical score. Following image viewing, judges will provide their commentary, including the final score, for each image and participants will have the chance to share their scores, comments or questions.

The panel of judges will cover the characteristics of a compelling image, the evaluation criteria for determining awards, how to determine awards for images with identical scores, and the positive features of top-scoring photograph.
Our goal for this session is for participants to gain additional “tools” and learn how to put them into practice to craft the image that is in their minds when they step behind the camera. It will also give participants the perspective of sitting in the judges chair to see what elements contribute to creating a compelling competition image.
